Goddess Saraswati is the Goddess of knowledge and wisdom.. Her blessings are invoked by devotees and, even today, in many parts of the country on the first day of school. The Goddess is associated with the colour white, which stands for tranquility and calm. The Shloka here is a prayer to Goddess Saraswati to invoke Her blessings.
Goddess Saraswati Shloka
या कुन्देन्दुतुषारहारधवला या शुभ्रवस्त्रावृता ।
या वीणावरदण्डमण्डितकरायाश्वेतपद्मासना ॥
यास ब्रह्माच्युतशडूकरप्रभृतिभिर्देवः सदा वन्दिता ।
सा मां पातु सरस्वती भगवति नि : शेष जाड्यापहा ॥
English translation
First line
Your fair complexion reminds me of the cool moonlight and jasmine flowers.
You look so serene, draped in a white sari and seated on the elegant throne of a white lotus flower.
Second line
Your beautiful hands strum the Veena that drives the dark clouds of ignorance away and imparts knowledge, wisdom and a sense of a balanced intellect that nurtures the conscience.
Third line
Even Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh worship you for your attributes.
Fourth line
O Goddess Saraswati, shower your blessings on me
